This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 When I started A Game of Thrones in December of 2018， I'm pretty sure I hadn't read a book recreationally since middle school。 Since then， I've read 65 books and I can't imagine what the hell I'd do if I didn't have a hundred good books to look forward to reading。 I've read a lot of amazing books that I'll reread， that I'll write and think about years after， that I'll recommend to friends， etc。， but I still have never read anything I've loved as much as George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire When I started A Game of Thrones in December of 2018， I'm pretty sure I hadn't read a book recreationally since middle school。 Since then， I've read 65 books and I can't imagine what the hell I'd do if I didn't have a hundred good books to look forward to reading。 I've read a lot of amazing books that I'll reread， that I'll write and think about years after， that I'll recommend to friends， etc。， but I still have never read anything I've loved as much as George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series。 This isn't a sad thing， its not like I'm constantly disappointed by how everything pales in comparison， but its just to say that I almost don't even feel like I can compare reading a GRRM book to reading a book by any other author。 And now that I've come around to reading this book， Fire and Blood， I really can't say things have changed—reading GRRM continues to be one of my absolute favorite things， and I still am astounded by how incredible this world George has made is （and by how much I love so many characters of his in a book that spans ~150 years and thus has a ridiculous amount of characters who， at most， live for a few dozen pages）。So， I loved it， of course。 Very sad I've read the last of GRRM's published works on Westeros （though technically I could and probably will read The World of Ice and Fire companion/illustrated/atlas book）。 Came into this thinking I'd of course love it because it was George RR Martin， but I think I enjoyed it way more than I even thought。 I literally liked reading about some Targaryen king's tax policies as much as I enjoyed any of the court intrigues or wars。 There are a ton of characters that I now want random spin-off stories for， à la Dunk & Egg， but Lord knows George has （put） enough on his plate already。 To name a few （or more than a few） despite that， though: Mushroom， Cregan Stark & Alysanne Blackwood， Alaric Stark， Rego Draz， Elissa Farman， Corlys Velaryon， Alyn Oakenfist， Marilda of Hull， Jonquil Darke， Aerea Targaryen， Baelon & Aemon Targaryen （and quite literally just any Targaryen named Aemon）， Rhaena Targaryen， tons of other relatively more minor characters， etc。Also， very excited for the House of the Dragons show after this， as the Dance of the Dragons is a fucking terrific basis for a story。 。。。more

This is a history book and it reads like one， so while I loved getting more info because I’m into deep dives， this is not for a casual reading day hahaha。 I enjoyed getting more info on the Targaryens and I gotta say I am stoked to see how the new show is。

Very interesting to learn the Targaryen history but after getting over half way through I was slightly weary of the text book style listings of kings following queens following kings etc。 Not a patch on game of thrones but still enjoyable for diehard fans。

I wasn’t sure I’d like this book， as it’s written from a historian’s perspective- kind of like a textbook in some ways。 But， then again， I always enjoyed history in school。 “Fire and Blood” truly is an apt title for the history of Targaryen rule in Westeros。 Entertaining and informative。

καλύτερο που έχει γραφτεί ποτέ。 Αποτελεί το αριστούργημα του Martin στο οποίο ξεδιπλώνονται οι συγγραφικές του ικανότητες σε όλο τους το μεγαλείο， όχι μόνο στα πλαίσια της σειράς A Song of Ice and Fire αλλά γενικά στην συγγραφική του πορεία。 Σύμφωνα με τον συγγραφέα， είναι ότι είναι το Σιλμαρίλλιον για την μυθολογία της Μέσης-Γης， το GRRMarilion – και μπορώ να πω ότι πετυχαίνει τον σκοπό του。 Είναι ο πιο ταλαντούχος συγγραφέας της περιόδου μας， είναι ένας νέος Tolkien της εποχής μας που μπροστά του οι υπόλοιποι συγγραφείς όπως ο Jordan και ο Sanderson σβήνουν， μη δυνάμενοι να συγκριθούν σοβαρά。 Το βιβλίο είναι η τελευταία προσθήκη του Martin στον κόσμο του Westeros。 Αφορά την εξιστόρηση της βασιλείας του οίκου Targaryen στο Westeros （ τα πρώτα 150 χρόνια μιας και είναι ο πρώτος τόμος）。 Μέσα από αυτό δίνονται λεπτομέρειες για πρόσωπα και καταστάσεις που είτε δεν υπάρχουν σε άλλα δημοσιευμένα έργα είτε υπάρχουν σε περιληπτική μορφή。 Έτσι ο αναγνώστης αποκτά μία βαθύτερη κατανόηση για το συνολικό έργο του συγγραφέα στο Westeros。 Την ίδια στιγμή έχει όλα τα στοιχεία που έχουν συγκινήσει τους αναγνώστες του ανά τον κόσμο。 Παρακάτω ακολουθεί μία αναλυτικότερη περιγραφή του για την ανάπτυξη μίας πληρέστερης εικόνας。Καταρχάς το βιβλίο είναι για τους fan του κόσμου του Martin και ειδικότερα για τους fan των Targaryen。 Δεν είναι τόσο για αυτούς που αρκούνται απλά να διαβάζουν μία μυθιστορία όσο για αυτούς που θέλουν να εντρυφούν στον εκάστοτε κόσμο σαν να ήταν ο πραγματικός。 Αυτό σημαίνει πως καλύτερα θα ήταν να έχουν διαβάσει την σειρά A Song of Ice and Fire πρώτα。 Την ίδια στιγμή λεπτομέρειες που θα έπρεπε να υπάρχουν μέσα βάση λογικής της αφήγησης， δεν υπάρχουν。 Αντίθετα αυτές μπορούν να βρεθούν στο A World of Ice and Fire – ένα compendium του κόσμου， οπότε και αυτό μαζί με το wikia στο intenet σχεδόν αποτελούν υποχρεωτικά αναγνώσματα。 Ουσιαστικά σχεδιάστηκε ως μέρος μίας ολοκληρωμένης αφήγησης του κόσμου。 Είναι κατανοητό λοιπόν γιατί μπορεί ένα μέρος του αναγνωστικού κοινού να μην ενδιαφέρεται για κάτι τέτοιο， δεν αποτελεί όμως εγγενές ελάττωμα του。 Στο βιβλίο η αφήγηση δεν γίνεται μέσα από τα μάτια των χαρακτήρων αλλά με την χρήση μία παραλλαγής του παντογνώστη αφηγητή。 Όχι από τον ίδιο τον Martin αλλά την περσόνα του για εδώ， τον αρχιμέϊστερ Ghyldain τα γραπτά του οποίου βρήκε και μετέφρασε。 Είναι σχεδόν η ίδια τακτική που ακολούθησε και ο Tolkien με το Σιλαμρίλλιον – εξού και GRRMarilion。 Ο Martin， πιστός στην θέληση του για πιστότητα， επιχειρεί να το γράψει όπως θα έγραφε ένας συγγραφέας του μεσαίωνα。 Και εδώ είναι το πρώτο πρόβλημα για αρκετούς。 Δεν είναι γραμμένο με την κλασσική αφήγηση όπως γράφονται συνήθως τα μυθιστορήματα αλλά με αυτή ενός ιστορικού του μεσαίωνα ή χρονικογράφου όπως είναι η σωστή ορολογία， όπου στην συγγραφή παρεισφρύουν ατεκμηρίωτες ιστορίες και προσωπικές απόψεις του συγγραφέα。 Δύο καλά πραγματικά παραδείγματα είναι η Ιστορία του Ηρόδοτου και οι Βίοι Παράλληλοι του Πλουτάρχου。 Ένας κύριος σκοπός είναι να δώσει έναν αέρα αυθεντικότητας στο έργο του。 Το ένα πρόβλημα είναι πως πολλοί στην αρχή δεν ήξεραν πως ήταν γραμμένο έτσι και τους ξένισε το τρόπος γραφής。 Συνήθως αυτό είναι πρόβλημα του συγγραφέα， εδώ όμως ως φαίνεται ο εκδοτικός οίκος το προμόταρε ως κλασσικό μυθιστόρημα και όχι ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας。 Προσωπικά θεωρώ πως για αυτόν τον λόγο δεν έχει κάποια ευθύνη αν και κάποιοι σίγουρα θα διαφωνήσουν με βάση το επιχείρημα περί μη αντίδρασης του στις ενέργειες του εκδότη του。 Το άλλο πρόβλημα έρχεται από το γεγονός πως ενίοτε ο τρόπος γραφής είναι ο στεγνός και αποστειρωμένος τρόπος ενός σύγχρονου ιστορικού και για κάποιους κάτι τέτοιο προκαλεί σύγχυση ως προς τον τόνο και το ύφος της γραφής。 Ένα άλλο χαρακτηριστικό του βιβλίου είναι πως στην πραγματικότητα αποτελεί συλλογή ιστοριών。 Τα περιεχόμενα του δεν γράφτηκαν όλα μαζί από την αρχή ως το τέλος αλλά σε διαφορετικά χρονικά διαστήματα με ότι αυτό συνεπάγεται για την ποιότητα τους。 Οι ιστορίες αυτές συγκεντρώθηκαν και υπέστησαν retcon και εμπλουτισμό αν και όχι όλες στον ίδιο βαθμό， με αποτέλεσμα να υπάρχει ποιοτική διαφορά μεταξύ τους – κάτι που δεν ταιριάζει με την εικόνα του ολοκληρωμένου και ενιαίου έργου που υποτίθεται πως είναι。 Είναι γεγονός δυστυχώς πως δεν υπήρξε η απαραίτητη επεξεργασία。 Και αυτή η κατάσταση απαντά και σε ένα άλλο πρόβλημα， αλλά σε αυτό θα αναφερθώ αργότερα。 Ένα άλλο πρόβλημα του βιβλίου είναι η έλλειψη χάρτη。 Η εξιστόρηση λαμβάνει χώρα σε πολλά μέρη και εκτός και αν κάποιος έχει μεγάλη εξοικείωση με τον κόσμο του Martin， θα μπερδευτεί χωρίς ένα χάρτη δίπλα του。 Στην σειρά A Song of Ice and Fire υπάρχει ένας γενικός χάρτης με τα κυριότερα σημεία και ακόμα και στο Σιλμαρίλλιον υπάρχει λεπτομερής χαρτογράφηση ώστε ο αναγνώστης να μην μπερδεύεται όταν ψάχνει να βρει τις τοποθεσίες των γεγονότων και την πορεία των χαρακτήρων。 Είναι γεγονός ότι εντός του βιβλίου υπάρχει εξαιρετικό artwork （ αν και προσωπικά προτιμώ τις απεικονίσεις της Villeneuve στο A World of Ice and Fire ）， ίσως όμως κάποιες θα μπορούσαν να λείπουν για να υπάρχει χώρος για τους χάρτες。 Οι τόποι και τα γεγονότα περιγράφονται εξαιρετικά – κάποιοι θα παραπονεθούν ότι αρκετές κεντρικές τοποθεσίες χρειάζονταν επιπλέον περιγραφή。 Η απάντηση είναι πως αυτές οι τοποθεσίες περιγράφονται ήδη εκτενώς σε άλλα έργα του συγγραφέα και υπάρχουν απεικονίσεις τους σε άλλα έργα για τον κόσμο και ελεύθερα προσβάσιμα στο διαδίκτυο， μιας και το βιβλίο απευθύνεται σε αναγνώστες που είναι καλά ενημερωμένοι για τον κόσμο。 Παρόλα αυτά σε μεγάλο βαθμό δεν περιγράφονται διότι και εντός της εξιστόρησης σε μεγάλο μέρος της οι τοποθεσίες είναι σε αρχικό στάδιο ανάπτυξης ή κατασκευής που δεν υπάρχουν πολλά για να ειπωθούν ενώ ο Martin σε γενικές γραμμές δεν προχωράει σε περιγραφές με άμεσο τρόπο αν αυτό δεν αφορά την πλοκή του。 Οι χαρακτήρες του όλοι έχουν βάθος και σε όλους αφιερώνει χρόνο για να τους δομήσει και αναπτύξει κατάλληλα。 Δεν αφιερώνει σε όλους τον ίδιο χρόνο ούτε τους εμβαθύνει στον ίδιο βαθμό – όπως είπα πιο πάνω， πρέπει να έχουν σχέση με την πλοκή του。 Εν τούτοις όλοι είναι καλογραμμένοι χαρακτήρες， από την οπτική ότι ξέρει κάποιος ποιοι είναι και δεν είναι καθώς και τα κίνητρα τους， με αποτέλεσμα να μπορεί να κατανοεί τις πράξεις τους。 Όλες οι ιστορίες είναι σημαντικές για την κύρια εξιστόρηση， αν και δεν έχουν όλες το ίδιο ενδιαφέρον。 Σε καμία από αυτές δεν υπάρχει η παραμικρή απορία περί της πλοκής – εκτός ίσως από κάποια σημεία του Χορού των Δράκων。 Η ιστορία εξυπηρετεί ανάμεσα σε άλλα και λειτουργικούς σκοπούς μιας και έπρεπε να εξηγηθεί η απουσία των δράκων από την κύρια σειρά ενώ η εξόντωση τους από απλά όπλα δεν ήταν ικανοποιητική ακριβώς λόγω της σχεδόν άτρωτης φύσης τους。 Θεωρώ πως το περιστατικό στον Δρακόλακκο κατά την διάρκεια του Χορού είναι περίεργο， εν μέρει και για αυτόν τον λόγο。 Όμως κανείς δεν μπορεί να αρνηθεί ότι συνολικά ο Χορός είναι ίσως το πιο δραματικό και ταυτόχρονα μυθιστορηματικό μέρος του βιβλίου。 Συνολικά οι ιστορίες βοηθούν και σε κάτι άλλο: την εμβάθυνση του κόσμου όσον αφορά τα μυστήρια της αρχαίας Βαλύρια και ιδίως όσον αφορά την φύση και προέλευση των δράκων， τον δεσμό τους με τους Ταργκάρυεν και την εξήγηση σε πολλά περιστατικά και συμπεριφορές που αλλιώς δεν έχουν κανένα νόημα。 Δυστυχώς είναι φανερά μόνο στον πολύ προσεκτικό αναγνώστη που θα μπει στην διαδικασία να ενώσει τις τελείες που ο συγγραφέας έχει διάσπαρτες στο έργο του。 Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα αποτελεί η ιστορία της Aerya Targaryen που ρίχνει φως στην φύση των δράκων ή η ιστορία της Raena Targaryen που δείχνει πολύ καλύτερα τις βαλυριανές συνήθειες ή ακόμα και ο ίδιος ο Χορός που επιπλέον μας δείχνει με στοιχεία κρυμμένα σε κοινή θέα πως πολλές φορές τα πράγματα δεν είναι όπως φαίνονται。 Ταυτόχρονα， μαζί με την κριτική εξέταση του υπόλοιπου υλικού， μπορούν να φανούν οι επιρροές του συγγραφέα από άλλα κείμενα του fantasy κλασσικά και μη， αλλά και οι επιρροές του από περιστατικά και φαινόμενα του πραγματικού κόσμου όπως το γεγονός ότι οι Ταργκάρυεν αντιστοιχούν στους Πλανταγενέτες της Αγγλίας ή πως η αρχαία Βαλύρια αντιστοιχεί στην Ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορία με τις ελεύθερες πόλεις να είναι η σημαντικότερες πόλεις κληρονόμοι της ρωμαϊκής κληρονομιάς。 Τέλος άλλο μεγάλο πρόβλημα， αποκλειστικά της ελληνικής έκδοσης， είναι η μετάφραση。 Είναι επιεικώς μέτρια。 Εντόπισα αρκετούς αγγλισμούς ενώ σε άλλα μέρη η αφήγηση φαινόταν περίεργη ακριβώς επειδή θεωρώ πως δεν έγινε προσεκτική μετάφραση。 Κρίμα， μιας και στο πρωτότυπο η αφήγηση ρέει εξαιρετικά ενώ στο μεταφρασμένο δείχνει να υπάρχει πρόβλημα που φυσιολογικά δεν θα έπρεπε να υπάρχει。 Και αυτό χαλάει την συνολική εικόνα του βιβλίου που υπό φυσιολογικές συνθήκες είναι αξιόλογο。Και εδώ ερχόμαστε σε ένα σημαντικό ερώτημα。 Τι είναι το Φωτιά και Αίμα; Μυθιστόρημα ή χρονικό; Τίποτα από τα δύο， και τα δύο ταυτόχρονα。 Το βιβλίο έχει στοιχεία και των δύο τρόπων συγγραφής。 Κάποιες ιστορίες， όπως η βασιλεία του Αίνυς είναι γραμμένες όπως μία καταγραφή ιστορίας。 Κάποιες άλλες όπως ο Χορός έχουν μία πιο μυθιστορηματική δομή του κλασσικού fantasy όπως φαίνεται από την μονομαχία του Νταίρον και Αίμοντ στο Μάτι του Θεού。 Έχει σχεδόν τον ίδιο τρόπο συγγραφής με το Σιλμαρίλλιον και ειδικότερα με το Quenda Silamrillion και σε πραγματικά συγγράματα με τους Βίους παράλληλους του Πλουταρχου – αν και οι Βίοι κατατάσσονται ως ιστορικό έργο， θα πρέπει να έχουμε στο μυαλό μας πως έχουν πολλές ανέκδοτες πληροφορίες και προσωπικές σκέψεις και κρίσεις του συγγραφέα ενώ άλλες επιβεβαιωμένες πληροφορίες και στοιχεία που είναι απαραίτητα στην καταγραφή ιστορίας δεν υπάρχουν， αυτό είναι γενικό φαινόμενο ιστορικών της αρχαιότητας και του μεσαίωνα που θεωρούσαν πως έπρεπε να το κάνουν κατάλληλο για την πλειοψηφία των αναγνωστών και όχι μόνο των λογίων και να δώσουν μεσά από την εξιστόρηση τους τα ηθικά διδάγματα που οι ίδιοι θεωρούσαν απαραίτητα μέσω της επιλεκτικής ενίοτε παρουσίασης ιστορικών φιγούρων。 Προσωπικά θεωρώ ότι είναι ένα μυθιστόρημα με περιτύλιγμα χρονικού。Το Φωτιά και Αίμα έρχεται ως μία σημαντική προσθήκη σε ένα φιλόδοξο και σημαντικό έργο， ένα έργο που δίκαια από αρκετούς χαρακτηρίζεται μέρος της κλασσικής λογοτεχνίας。 Αν και ο συγγραφέας ακόμα δεν έχει τελειώσει το συγγραφικό έργο του και δεν ξέρουμε πως θα εξελιχθεί， μπορεί να ειπωθεί πως δίκαια κατέχει μία θέση δίπλα στους μεγάλους κλασσικούς λογοτέχνες όπως ο Βίκτωρας Ουγκώ， ο Αλέξανδρος Δουμάς， οι Τολστόι και Ντοστογιέφσκι， ο Χόρχε Λουίς Μπόρχε και για τους λάτρεις του fantasy τον J。R。R。Tolkien， τον C。S。 Lewis， την Ανν Μακκάφρει， τον Ρόμπερτ Χάουαρντ， το H。P。 Lovecraft， A curious book， even within the larger Westeros universe。 It's from the perspective of an old archmaester， so it doesn't have all of the psychological depth that the main ASOIAF books have （for better and worse）。 On the other hand， it covers a fair bit of time and space — something like 150 years of history， spanning all of Westeros and beyond — in a relatively short amount of pages。The stories told in here， if you've read the main ASOIAF books， will largely be familiar， at least in broad stroke A curious book， even within the larger Westeros universe。 It's from the perspective of an old archmaester， so it doesn't have all of the psychological depth that the main ASOIAF books have （for better and worse）。 On the other hand， it covers a fair bit of time and space — something like 150 years of history， spanning all of Westeros and beyond — in a relatively short amount of pages。The stories told in here， if you've read the main ASOIAF books， will largely be familiar， at least in broad strokes。 It starts with Aegon I and ends with Aegon III， with all sorts of wars， rebellions， and betrayals in between。 Martin has a habit of creating pretty vivid characters， so there's always someone worth following and paying attention to。 Sometimes he might borrow character-types from other stories （the Arya-type， the Ned Stark-type， etc。）， but since it works， it's no worry。Now， it's also worth saying that a few portions of this were largely printed in other iterations as short stories。 If you've read the Dance of Dragons stories， for example， those are here。 Martin did a great job weaving those stories into this， so it was hardly noticeable as "old" material。 I say this only because he keeps his narrative voice consistent， and that's no small feat。I could knock this for a few reasons， like there being so many characters with similar sounding names， but on the whole， it's a good read。 Probably only recommendable to people who are fans of the other books。 Not even the show （dare I speak its name） gets into enough detail to really prepare someone for reading this。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️- I finished （9 months later）！！！ Because this book is broken into time periods， it was easy to take a break from it for long periods of time。 That said， it was very entertaining and well written （of course）。 I’m looking forward to the HBO adoption next year！
